Palletized or Loose Cartons? Prepare Cargo for International Freight

Cargo preparation · Packing · Reviewed October 16, 2026 · 4 minute read

Palletizing can make cargo easier to handle, but it also changes the shipment’s dimensions, weight and loading pattern. Loose cartons may use space differently and can require more individual handling. The better option depends on the mode, cargo, warehouse process and destination delivery setup.

What palletizing changes

A pallet groups cartons into one handling unit. It can help reduce individual carton handling and keep a shipment organized, but the pallet and wrapping add weight and height. Measure the final loaded pallet, including any overhang, and report the number of pallets and cartons on each one.

When loose cartons may fit

Loose cartons may be practical for small parcels, courier services or some floor-loaded shipments. They must still be strong enough for stacking and handling in the selected mode. Confirm whether the warehouse or carrier accepts loose cargo and whether unloading or additional handling is included.

Protect and identify each unit

Use packaging suitable for the product’s weight, fragility, moisture exposure and route. Apply the required shipment labels where they remain visible, and keep labels from crossing box seams or being covered by stretch wrap. If using wood pallets or crates for US imports, check the applicable ISPM 15 requirements before packing.

Check mode and receiver requirements

Air and ocean providers may assess weight, volume and handling differently. A US warehouse, retailer or fulfillment center may impose its own carton, pallet, appointment and labeling instructions. Get the current receiving requirements from the destination before the supplier builds the shipment.

Quote the packed configuration

Send photos, carton count, pallet count, final dimensions, gross weight, stackability, origin, destination and target date through the [ANELGO inquiry form](../index.html#quote). If the packing plan changes after quotation, ask the forwarder to reconfirm the rate and acceptance.
