How to Calculate CBM for LCL Shipping from China
LCL (less-than-container-load) freight is commonly quoted using shipment volume and other chargeable details. A small measurement error across many cartons can change the quoted volume, so use the final outer dimensions of the packed cargo rather than product dimensions.
Use the outer packed dimensions
Measure each carton’s longest length, width and height after packing. Convert all three measurements to meters, then multiply: length × width × height = cubic meters (CBM) per carton. For example, a carton measuring 0.60 m × 0.40 m × 0.35 m is 0.084 CBM. This example is arithmetic only, not a rate or minimum-charge promise.
Add all cartons
Multiply one carton’s CBM by the number of identical cartons. For mixed sizes, calculate each carton group separately and add the results. Record the quantity and dimensions for every size; do not multiply an average carton by the total unless the cartons really are the same size.
Measure the shipment as it will move
Include pallets, skids, protective frames or overhang if they will remain on the freight. A warehouse may remeasure cargo, and actual rated volume may differ from an estimate. Tell the forwarder whether the cargo is stackable, fragile, irregular, or requires special handling because these details can affect acceptance and handling.
CBM is not the whole quote
Ask the provider how volume, weight, minimums, origin handling, destination CFS charges, customs scope and delivery are priced. Air freight may use a dimensional-weight formula, while LCL ocean quotes have their own rules and minimums. Do not apply one carrier’s conversion formula to every mode or provider.
Send measurements for a quote
Provide carton count, outer dimensions, gross weight, origin, US destination ZIP code and cargo-ready date. ANELGO’s [inquiry form](../index.html#quote) can be used to request a shipment-specific review; final pricing depends on the route and confirmed cargo measurements.
