How to request a worldwide freight quote from China

Shipping basics · Updated October 12, 2026 · 4 minute read

A useful international freight quote starts with a clear description of the cargo and the complete route. The more accurate the information, the easier it is for a forwarder to check service availability, identify document needs and compare transport options.

Give the full origin and destination

Include the pickup city and country, delivery city and country, and whether the address is a business, residence, port or warehouse. “Ship to Europe” or “send to the U.S.” is not enough to check the actual route and delivery options.

Describe the goods precisely

Use the commercial product name and explain what it is made of. Avoid vague descriptions such as “accessories” or “samples.” For battery-powered goods, state the battery type and configuration. For perfume, cosmetics, aerosols, lighters, knives, dried flowers or other unusual products, disclose the exact product and provide safety or product documents if available.

Include size, weight and packaging

Share the number of packages, dimensions, gross weight and packing style. For palletized or vehicle cargo, include measurements and photos when possible. These details can affect mode selection, handling and price.

State the timing and service you need

Tell the forwarder when the goods will be ready, whether there is a target delivery date and if you prefer air, ocean or another service. If you are unsure, say so; the quote can compare feasible options after the route and cargo are reviewed.

Ask what the quote includes

Confirm the service scope, pickup and destination charges, customs support responsibilities, delivery type, exclusions and quote validity. Ask which documents or approvals are outstanding. Charges and responsibilities vary with the shipment and service agreement.

Special cargo: A quote request does not mean the cargo has been accepted. Wait for written confirmation of the product, route, documents and booking before dispatch.
