Air Freight or Ocean Freight from China to the USA: How to Choose

Mode selection · China to USA · Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 minute read

Choosing between air and ocean freight is a trade-off among time, shipment size, handling needs and total landed cost. There is no universal weight threshold that makes one mode right for every shipment. Start with the cargo, route and delivery deadline, then compare like-for-like service scopes.

When air freight may fit

Air can be worth evaluating for time-sensitive replenishment, samples, compact high-value cargo or shipments where a long ocean transit would disrupt a launch. The quote still depends on chargeable weight, origin and destination handling, flight availability, product acceptance and delivery arrangements. “Air” does not automatically mean door-to-door.

When ocean freight may fit

Ocean is commonly evaluated for larger or less time-sensitive shipments. Options may include less-than-container load (LCL) or full-container load (FCL). Ask for the complete route, sailing schedule, origin and destination charges, customs responsibilities and final-mile scope; port-to-port transit is not the same as warehouse-to-door time.

Compare the same scope

Request at least two written options using identical cargo data and delivery addresses. Compare pickup, export handling, main carriage, destination handling, customs brokerage, duties and taxes, appointment or residential delivery, and any surcharges. Separate estimates from confirmed charges and check quote validity.

Review cargo restrictions first

Batteries, perfumes, aerosols, lighters and other regulated or unusual products can affect mode availability. Share the exact product description, composition, battery details and safety documents before booking. A route cannot be confirmed from a product category name alone.

A practical decision checklist

List the cargo-ready date, delivery ZIP code, carton count, dimensions, gross weight, cargo value and deadline. Ask what milestones the quoted transit time covers and what events can change it, such as customs examination or missed cutoffs. Select a mode only after the actual route and acceptance are confirmed.
